As most parents will know teething can be a particularly tough time. The constant grumpyness, lack of sleep for all and then the non stop dribble can play havoc with little ones delicate skin. Many health care professionals are not convinced on the link between teething and eczmea flare ups in babies and toddlers but many mum’s will tell you that the constant wet clothing chaffing against skin certainly doesn’t help skin and we get a lot of enquiries about our teething bibs being used to combat eczema symptoms.
Let’s look at the basics of eczema as a skin condition.
Eczema is a common skin condition affecting ten to twenty per cent of children. The exact cause of eczema is not known. However if there is a history of eczema, asthma or hay fever in the family, your child is more likely to develop one of these conditions. Unfortunately there is no cure for eczema, although there are many ways to keep it under control. Approximately fifty per cent of children will no longer be troubled by eczema by two years of age and eighty five per cent by five years of age.
Eczema is a red, hot, dry and itchy rash that can affect one or many areas on the face and body and it can be mild, moderate or severe. There are often scratch marks on the skin because of the itch. These areas may become infected with bacteria and this can worsen the eczema. Often with serious eczema infections many GP’s will prescribe antibiotics to combat the infection.
So how can teething make eczema worse?
When the rash begins it normally affects the face, cheeks and under the neck in those cute little baby folds that they get when they are young. The cheeks and chin become red, dry, hot and itchy. This is made worse by dribbling, hands touching the face and mouth and saliva irritating the skin. Put with that damp vests and clothing and it’s pretty much eczema’s favourite breeding ground.
It is essential therefore that clothing on your child’s skin must not irritate the eczema further. Clothing that feels ‘prickly’ to the touch to you and contains large fibres such as wool, frills and man made fabrics can further irritate already sore and delicate skin. Stay away from clothing with thick seams and look for super soft cotton clothing and fabrics that feel cool against their skin and encourage airflow to raw areas.
